Quicker to Brucargo by bike
By 2020, employees working at Brucargo will be able to cycle to work easier and more safely. Plans for a cycle tunnel under the Haachtsesteenweg in Melsbroek (at the corner of Luchthavenlaan) have existed for some time, but things are beginning to move now.
Minister Ben Weyts (N-VA – New Flemish Alliance) is putting aside 710,000 euros for the construction of the cycle tunnel. The ‘missing link’ in the northern access route to the airport will be resolved. The first step was taken in 2009 with the construction of the cycle bridge over the E19 between Peutie and Machelen. Residents of a large part of the ‘Vlaamse Rand’ (Flemish periphery) can cycle across this bridge towards Brucargo, but have to follow a long detour to reach the cargo zone of the airport safely. The cycle path stops in Melsbroek, at the busy Haachtsesteenweg. As a result, few employees are currently coming to work by bike, but that is set to change.
“This cycle tunnel is the last of a number of infrastructural interventions which will enable multimodal access to the site at the north side of the airport. The tunnel will therefore facilitate a change in the mobility behaviour of the staff of Brussels Airport”, says Minister Ben Weyts.
All going well, the cycle tunnel will be in operation by 2020.
